The Shadow Box was constructed from particleboard. The box provided 1) Mounting points for the screen, 2) The containing space into which blocks are placed 3) Supports for two Phidget RFID readers, one Phidget Interface Kit, and 150 Christmas lights. We used a semi-translucent paper for the screen to facilitate rear-screen projection. We mounted a projector just behind the rear wall of the box. The projector is connected to a computer that displays flash animations.The blocks are made of the same material as the box, however each block is layered to add thickness and to permit the placement of an RFID tag inside. The top layer of each picture block is individually cut to afford the placement of a matching word block.
